Pls keep the same structure for each post. First a narrow line, than the date, than your post. Don't forget your name ! I suggest to add new posts at the TOP. Once a week one can remove a few old posts to prevent this page from going very long
.. Have fun!

Hi guys!
Have put up quite a few pages here today .. oops it's 2:04PM already so .. yesterday & today
Hope it's all interesting. I sure am VERY fond of this wiki site and I sure am willing to contribute and to keep maintain this initiative! *Thumbsup* It is very nice indeed to have this site where (like mikes page) not just 1 person has to write the entire content. This goos very fast indeed!
Spread the word around! Ow and don't forget: BOOKMARK this website!

Howdy, I added an Interesting Existing Simulator Projects section since I realized I kept adding stuff on several places that mostly refer to our club project, thus I realized I needed a central place to describe the whole project - it's a GA prop sim that seems to be a bit less common compared to the big jet projects out there, and it uses several things together to get a working sim, thus I added a section and a subpage to it. I think it doesnt need to be a list where we add every sim project in existence (Mike's Flight Deck has that already), but more like a place where one can add projects that have good tutorials or otherwise are active and have somehow informational websites and so get referred to often.
Oh by the way, the new stylesheet is missing the "DRAFT" watermark from the default look when you "preview" pages - this has caused me to lose an edited page at least once when I didnt realize it never got saved...
//Tuomas
You are right, Tuomas... the draft background image is not there. I also had to rewrite a page after I edited, used the preview, found it ok and closed the browser tab and thereby lost my changes
I'll look into putting the draft bg image back into the preview in this new wiki theme.
Okay. Personally I dont mind if we just used the default theme - the content is the thing that is important anyway. The navbar on the left is nice, but it is not about the content at all, thus it is sort of redundant if you understand what I mean. But it's OK as it is - just the draft thing is a problem.
Btw, content is shaping up nicely. Time to push it more on the forum to get more contributions
//Tuomas
OK, should be fixed now. It was a CSS problem. The new theme had a background color for all content defined, which the original theme didn't have. I noticed that the 'draft' bg image was still there, just visible around the draft frame, just a few pixels wide.
You might have to use your browsers' Reload button to make it reload the css stylesheet. -- Manuel
Hey. I'm just in the planning phase of my project, but this page is great to get info. And still growing .... very very nice. I'll be back here a lot more often. -- Hans

Just a reminder .. pls post the date before your post and don't forget your name!
Tnx This way we know whom posted and also we can keep track of how old certain posts are. Also I had suggested to add at the top but apparently that isn't popular :p Doesn't matter. Cheers,

Yeah, I think it is OK to not put the date if the posts happen on the same day, but when the day changes, like on this post, just put the new date on the first post of that day

Comment about the PCI Video cards page:
"minimum specs: min 8MB of ram" seems a little bit outdated, esp. for MSFS, isn't it ?
Does MSFS even run on any graphics card with less than 64MB video ram ?
BTW: try to keep the wiki simulator independent... If you have sim-specific tips, please say what sim you are talking about, maybe something along the lines "For MSFS do this"
--Manuel
Sorry 'bout that then. Most people tend to use MSFS anyway but it's true that whe shouldn't leave out the others. Then on the 8MB .. true that it will probably enjoy a bit more if you give it. None the less, that's what MS tells us. They tell us as well that FS9 runs on a PI 450Mhz hahaha .. yeah sure
We all know better don't we .. Beside, look for a gracard that has DirectX9 compatible drivers .. that takes you to ATI and Nvidia chips .. you almost never find any interesting offers that got less than 64MB ram. Ok you find them but then for rediculously low price. If you buy one of those by mistake you didn't lose much money. (--Por)

Most people tend to use MSFS anyway yeah, but everything out there points them to MSFS only, then of course they don't know anything else... Many non-MSFS simmers don't have a very high opinion of it. Too much eye candy and this multi-billion dollar corporation cannot even get airplanes to fly halfway realistic... why are there so many freeware/payware planes and modified air files ? Why not try out some of the niche simulators? Cause they got no smoking tires on touchdown ???
I'd like to try out PS1... but buying it just for testing it...

In the end it is about the whole complete setup. Not about a great flight model, or good graphics alone. MSFS is not perfect, but there is the biggest add-on community around it. We have a project that has just 95% finished redoing the *entire* coastline, lakes, roads, and powerlines of Finland. There is a redone "landclass" that makes cities and countryside more like the real Finland (MSFS by default has most of Finland be pure forest) This is an incredible thing for people who do VFR flying or training. There are a great number of free add-on sceneries of finnish airports - check out http://fisd.fsnordic.net/projects.php if you want to fly in Finland. All this, MalmiAviationClubSim and the community make MSFS the best choice for us right now.
This does not mean X-plane's praised flight model is not interesting, or that I am not keeping an eye on FlightGear. It's just a matter of practial values - to get a simulator that works. If it is also The Right Thing To Do, the better, but in reality many times it's about making compromises, whether you like it or not. I have Windows 2000 on one computer just because MSFS does not run on anything else than Windows. I'd rather use Linux and FlightGear, but it is not yet a practical choice for us. But when it becomes an alternative, we'll be sure to consider it.
Is there any development going on to get a vatsim client for FlightGear by the way?
//Tuomas
Tuomas, the thing about add-ons is sort of a chicken and egg problem... you only get lots of users if you have a lot to offer, but for flightgear to offer more add-ons, scenery objects (buildings and stuff, remember, theres a whole world to cover) we would need more peoble that develop them...
We are using some 3D aircraft models that were contributed by people who made them for MSFS originally, but allowed us to use them, even under the GPL
Concering vatsim client: this question pops up every now and then, but officially it cannot be included in flightgear, since the specs for the protocol are available only under a NDA
So either someone reverse-engineers the protocol or writes a closed source program, but this would have to be distributed by a third party, not by flightgear.
Esp. the C172 should be pretty good in flightgear since this is the default plane and thus should be one of the better flight dynamics models.

Manuel, you are preaching to the choir
I agree completely. I think there were plans for Vatsim to review the protocol and open it up, but they said it needed some major cleanup first. //Tuomas

you are preaching to the choir yeah, I thought so. I nearly wrote that. Still, others are reading these pages. Let them learn

Don't mind if we do !

Ioooooo folks .. wazzup. Is this wiki ready or what ? Where's the tons of info that should be 'bulked' up here every day ? :p I did my best but I think almost all I know is on here somewhere already. Is there more ? I don't mind if it grows very slowly though I just hope people won't forget about this cuz it is already a good source of info. (--Por)
(2004-09-01)
Ready? never... it will continue to grow (at least we all hope), albeit more slowly. Maybe we need to bring it back to attention of people in the forums. I also think its time to 'revive' the logo contest. So, its still open for new contributions, but I'd like to see a bit more work going into the two that looked best.
